— Grace Geno was honored as the Baldwinsville Optimist Club’s April Student of the Month at an Optimist dinner at Big Mama’s Diner, April 16. Her proud parents are Dennis and Marge Geno, of Baldwinsville.

Besides being an excellent student and a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor’s Society, Geno is active in church, community and school activities. She volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospital helping out wherever needed and at Syracuse Home. Her volunteer work there has helped her decide on a career path as a physician’s assistant. She plans to go to Le Moyne College majoring in biology, her favorite subject.

Geno is a member of the Baker High School Girl’s Swimming Team, Varsity Track and Field team and the Indoor Track team. She said running helps clear her mind and relieves stress. She loves musical theater and has been part of Baker’s high school musicals in all her three years at Baker. Also, she has performed with the Baldwinsville Theater Guild and the Christian School of Performing Arts. A member of the County Chorus, Chamber Choir and Baker’s jazz group, “B’ville Belles,” Geno has competed in the New York School Music Association in voice as a soprano at level 6 where she sang Ave Maria. This remarkable young woman was nominated to be a student of the month by her guidance counselor, Kristen Foote, who said that Geno is a great student deserving of recognition.

The head of the Student of the Month selection committee is Optimist Joyce Ramseyer and the Baker High School Guidance Department. Optimist Students of the month receive a certificate, a monetary gift, an Optimist coffee mug, a dinner for the student and her/his family, and are eligible for a $1,000 Optimist scholarship during Moving Up Day, held May 25 this year.

The Baldwinsville Optimist Club is a civic community organization dedicated to supporting youth and community activities and is affiliated with Optimist International. Anyone contemplating joining the club can send a letter of interest to P.O. 141, Baldwinsville, 13012 or email to ddvarn@msn.com.
