— More than one dozen women from the Skaneateles and Auburn areas came together last week at Creekside Books and Coffee for the first local meeting of Vagabond Gals, a travel club sponsored by Vagabond Tour and Travel of Baldwinsville. The club caters to women in search of like-minded travel companions.

“I love to travel, even if it’s just the armchair variety, so I loved the idea of starting and being involved in a travel club at Creekside,” said Creekside owner Erika Davis.

As a single mom and business owner, Davis has not done much traveling in the past 10 years and is hopeful the travel club and partnership with Vagabond founder and president Sally Fedrizzi will provide more opportunities to take the occasional trip.

There were many women from Skaneateles and Auburn looking for a meeting but not willing to go great distances to attend one, Fedrizzi said. Other Vagabond Gals club locations are Syracuse, Ithaca and Bradenton, Fla.

“Mostly, it is travel time and convenience for the women. I was starting to build a substantial email list for the Skaneateles/Auburn area, but the women would not attend meetings regularly due to the distance,” Fedrizzi said.

The clubs are for women who wish to travel but lack a travel partner for a variety of reasons. The venue gives them a chance to meet others wishing to travel to destinations they share an interest in.

“It might mean two women going to New York to see a play or 20 women traveling on a Caribbean cruise. The size of the group will depend on the interest within the club,” Fedrizzi said.

Auburn resident JoAnn Robbins said she is contemplating retirement soon from Midstate Mutual Insurance Company and signed up for the club’s first meeting to look for others who like to travel.
