Optimists announce May student of the month

— The Baldwinsville Optimist Club is pleased to announce that Baker High Senior Eric Anthony is its Student of the Month for May.

Anthony is a true scholar/athlete whose academic success has resulted in his ranking ninth in his class of more than 450 students. He has been inducted in both the National Honor Society and the Junior National Honor Society. Athletically, he has played basketball, lacrosse and baseball. Football is his sport of choice with his having been a captain of this year’s very successful varsity football team.

He has been honored many times for his excellence as a scholar/athlete during his sophomore, junior and senior years at Baker. This past fall he was the recipient of the Joe Witowski Student-Athlete Award, given to the highest academically ranked senior football player in the region, as well as the Central New York Chapter of The National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award.

Anthony has also achieved a black belt in Karate at the Iannuzzo’s Karate Studio. He is a volunteer who has participated in the Baldwinsville Community Scholarship phone-a-thon fund raising campaign this past year.

Outside of school activities, Anthony has been very active in the Baldwinsville based Maureen’s Hope Foundation Youth Group. Maureen’s Hope Foundation provides support for families facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis or other life altering diseases. Anthony has assisted in water distribution at Paige’s Butterfly Run fund raisers, assembling Easter baskets for children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital and assembling personalized “hope bracelets.” He also volunteers with the youth group assisting families with yard work and holiday decorating.

As a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, he has completed the religious education program that culminated with his confirmation in 10th grade. He has also participated in a variety of the parish’s activities including hospitality volunteer, sandwich making team, holiday distribution volunteer and Eucharistic Minister.
