Optimists announce January student of the month

Michaela J. Ennis

— Michaela J. Ennis is a senior at Baker High School who has excelled academically having been named to the high honor roll each quarter during her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years. She was inducted into the National Honor Society in her junior year having also been a member of the Junior National Honor Society during her eighth and ninth grade years. She is currently enrolled in pre-calculus, advanced placement psychology, drawing and painting III, participation in government and economics, and stage and screen.

She plays the viola in the Baker Orchestra in which she currently serves as treasurer, and is also a three-year member of the Chamber Orchestra. She was selected to be a member of the Area All State Orchestra in her ninth grade year.

Ennis’ athletic endeavors include participating on the Varsity Girls’ Crew team. She had previously been a member of the Junior Varsity Crew Team and has been a team member of the Syracuse Chargers Fall Competitive Team. In the past, Ennis has also rowed with the Chargers during the summer.

In terms of other extra-curricular activities, Ennis has been a member of the 2013 Class Council her sophomore, junior and senior years, and was secretary of her junior class. She has served on the Yearbook Staff, is a member of Jenna’s Mentors, the Baker Transition Team and she has served as a member of the set design for Sweeney Todd, A Company of Wayward Saints and 42nd Street.

Outside of school, Ennis has served as a member of the Onondaga County Youth Court through the Van Buren Town Court system throughout her high school career. The Youth Court is a diversion program that provides juvenile first-time offenders (between the ages of 7 and 15 years) with an opportunity to face the consequences of their actions without entering into the traditional criminal justice system. Youth Court is a peer-run court, which is made up of all volunteers who act out the various roles of the court such as judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and bailiffs. The court meets in the evening each month.
